Daylesford

Daylesford is an attractive country house standing in its own estate of some 1000 acres, three miles east of Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire. It was built for Warren Hastings; was later held by the Grisewood family (amongst whom Freddie Grisewood was a well-known BBC commentator) and by Baron Thyssen, a German industrialist; and is currently owned by Sir Anthony Bamford. The estate is NOT open to visitors.

Daylesford

At the date of the 1881 Census, Robert Nicholl Byass and his daughter Rose (soon to be married to Robert Kennard, whose sister Ellen was a guest in the house) were living in some style at Daylesford. The Census records show that they were attended by:

1 housekeeper
2 butlers
3 footmen
1 nurse
1 lady's maid
2 housemaids
1 kitchen maid
1 scullery maid
1 dairy maid
1 stillroom maid
1 launderess
2 laundry maids
7 gardeners
1 stud groom/coachman
4 grooms
and on the estate
1 farm steward
15 agricultural labourers

We could find no mention of a cook - perhaps Robert and his daughter preferred to do their own cooking?

At the time, eldest son Robert William is thought to have been visiting a mahogany forest in Honduras owned by the family (and subsequently presented by him to the British Government), and sons Sidney and Harry were at Radley College in Berkshire. Leonard does not appear on the 1881 Census.

Wyck Hill

His first wife having died, Robert Nicholl wished to re-marry; but (family tradition has it) his eldest son Robert William objected to his father bringing a new wife into Daylesford which had been his mother's home. If this was really the reason for Robert Nicholl's move in about 1883 from Daylesford to the comparatively gloomy Wyck Hill, the other side of Stow-on-the-wold, it makes him seem rather meek.

Some parts of the house as it would have been in Robert Nicholl's time have, we believe, been pulled down. The rest is now a country hotel.
